Teens Make History

Posted: July 8th, 2008

Teens spent the beginning of their summer adding Camp Fire’s nearly 100 year history to the walls of our new home.  Thanks to a grant from the Nebraska Arts Council, funds from our capital campaign and donations from Camp Fire’s Beyond Beads Society, a group of teens worked with local artist, Kristin Pluhacek to design a historical mural that graces our front lobby.

Camp Fire teens met at the building for planning sessions with Pluhacek to discuss ideas for the projects and review historical materials to become more familiar with our history.  Youth picked specific objects that they wanted to include in the mural and organized how each would be presented in the final piece.  Taking their ideas, Pluhacek constructed multiple versions of the mural and the teens provided feedback.  Once the design was agreed upon, Pluhacek drew a larger version including color and descriptions of each object.

The teens spent the next few weeks drawing and painting the mural on the lobby wall.  Pluhacek not only participated in the drawing and painting but coached the teens on proper techniques to use as well.  The teens had a great time working on this project and are proud that their work will permanently be on display at the Camp Fire office.  Each participant had the opportunity to learn about Camp Fire’s traditions as well as the process of creating a mural.
