On September 28, Camp Fire kids were treated to opening night of the ProRodeo Challenge for River City Roundup, courtesy of the Peter Kiewit Foundation. More than 100 students from Castelar, Gomez Heritage, Jackson and Liberty Elementary Schools were able to attend the rodeo and received t-shirts, hats, and handkerchiefs to get them into the “cowboy” spirit.

In addition to watching bareback riding and steer wrestling, the children from Camp Fire’s programs were able to meet the animals during the livestock exposition before the rodeo. It was here that the children held baby chicks, talked to goats, and came face to face with piglets whose noses “felt funny.” A favorite among the Camp Fire crowd were the kids who rode the sheep.

The Peter Kiewit Foundation has sponsored the ProRodeo Challenge trip for a group of Camp Fire kids for many years. The event serves to expand Camp Fire kids’ cultural awareness and is one of their favorite field trips of the entire year.
