An Absolutely Incredible Treat
Posted: January 16th, 2007

Thanks to the Peter Kiewit Foundation, this year’s Absolutely Incredible Kid winners were treated to the rare opportunity to witness the circle of life through Disney’s THE LION KING. The Foundation offered Camp Fire a number of tickets to the performance on the condition that they be given as an incentive for school attendance, improved grades, good behavior, outstanding citizenship and leadership, making it the perfect treat for our Absolutely Incredible Kids. In addition to the performance, each student received a special souvenir bag to remember the evening courtesy of Omaha Performing Arts, presenter of Disney’s THE LION KING.
The performance offered many of the kids a chance to enjoy the Orpheum Theatre and attend a live theatrical presentation for the first time. One child excitedly stated that her favorite part was when Simba and Nala found each other. Another preferred when Mufasa tried to save his son. Everyone enjoyed the music, surprises and excitement that Disney’s THE LION KING brought them.
Camp Fire’s Absolutely Incredible Kid Day is a national effort that aims to encourage adults to let kids know just how valuable they are. This day is a national letter-writing campaign urging adults to write letters of love and support to the children in their lives. Our Council participates each year by not only encouraging staff and parents to write personalized letters to the children, but also by selecting two children (one boy and one girl) from each program to be honored as the programs’ Absolutely Incredible Kids based on their conduct in manners, positive attitude, respect, and participation among others. The winners are given an award in addition to their letters and their picture is featured in the Omaha World Herald.
