Camp Fire’s Presence A Neighborhood Joy

August 8th, 2008

Stop by Camp Fire USA at 2566 St. Mary’s Avenue and see our new building’s exterior artwork!
Designed and executed by Leslie Bruning and Tim Barry, the five-paneled murals feature an array of happy children’s faces in painted and glazed mosaic tiles.

“All of the images came directly from photos of Camp Fire children,” Bruning, a nationally recognized sculpture artist and president of the Hot Shops said. “Their cropped, expressive faces give the effect of kids peering out the windows. Seeing these children will brighten the spirits of the neighborhood for decades to come.”

GO CAMP FIRE!

August 7th, 2008

Camp Fire supporters came out in full force at the 2008 Big Red Tailgate Gala on Friday.  Nearly 400 attended, most of them decked out in Cornhusker colors and ready to rally on behalf of Camp Fire.  Charles and Florence Lakin served as honorary chairmen for the event.  Longtime supporters of Camp Fire, the Lakins have made generous donations to the agency’s educational programs and capital campaign.

Event co-chairs and Camp Fire Guild Board members Dawn Dinsdale and Mary Jo Langdon organized the tailgate with a Big Red theme to kickoff the Nebraska football season.  During “halftime,” a team of Camp Fire kids led the crowd in a rousing rendition of the Nebraska Fight Song, giving everyone a reason to cheer.

“At Camp Fire, we count every day a game day and each child a champion,” said Executive Director Penny Parker.  “This event really helps us give disadvantaged kids a chance at an equal playing field in school and in life.”  Thank you to everyone who made this event a victory for the kids at Camp Fire!
