An Absolutely Incredible Treat

Thanks to the Peter Kiewit Foundation, this year’s Absolutely Incredible Kid winners were treated to the rare opportunity to witness the circle of life through Disney’s THE LION KING. The Foundation offered Camp Fire a number of tickets to the performance on the condition that they be given as an incentive for school attendance, improved grades, good behavior, outstanding citizenship and leadership, making it the perfect treat for our Absolutely Incredible Kids. In addition to the performance, each student received a special souvenir bag to remember the evening courtesy of Omaha Performing Arts, presenter of Disney’s THE LION KING.

Camp Fire Kids—A Story to Tell

Hot Dog Event

Tears and laughter united as Erin Gruwell told her students’ stories of courage and determination to more than 400 Camp Fire supporters. Gruwell took a group of seemingly “unteachable” teens in Long Beach and transformed them into critical thinkers, aspiring college students, and citizens for change. Building upon the stories of Anne Frank and Zlata Filipovic, Gruwell encouraged her students to pick up their journals and tell their stories…the resulting diary was made into both a book and a major motion picture starring Hilary Swank as Gruwell.
